The Golden Notebook: # One

Breaking Ground on the Golden Sky Garden!

We are thrilled to announce that our long-dreamed Montessori Learning Garden is officially underway! This week, shovels hit the earth as children from Young Children’s Community through Upper Elementary joined together to plant the first seeds—both literal and metaphorical—of this vibrant outdoor classroom.

A Community Effort Blossoms
Thanks to the incredible generosity of our families, the success of this year’s Spring Fundraiser, and tireless volunteer hours, we’ve transformed a patch of land into a living laboratory. The garden will feature:

  • Raised beds for each level to tend (toddlers will grow sensory herbs, Elementary students will manage a vegetable plot).

  • A composting station to teach sustainability.

  • A pollinator garden to support local ecosystems.

  • And yes—the children have already asked about chickens! (We’re exploring a future coop with their input!).

"When can we eat the carrots we plant?"
—Lila, Primary student

Cross-Level Collaboration in Action

The garden has already sparked beautiful connections:

  • Toddlers collected rainwater in small pitchers to moisten the soil.

  • Lower Elementary students mapped the garden’s layout using math skills.

  • Upper Elementary researched companion planting for the squash seeds they’ll nurture.

This project embodies Montessori’s vision: practical, collaborative, and joyful learning at every stage.

Thank You, Golden Sky Heroes!

None of this would be possible without:

  • The Parent Association’s fundraising bake sales and silent auction.

  • Local businesses who donated tools and seeds.

  • Grandparent volunteers who built the garden’s cedar borders.

"It takes a village to grow a garden—and a child. We’re so grateful for this village."
—Ms. Rivera, Lead Guide

What’s Next?

  • May 10: Community Work Day (sign up to paint benches or plant strawberries!).

  • June: Watch for our "Garden Wish List" (help us add a sundial or worm bin!).

Stay tuned for more dirt—er, details!

With gratitude,
The Golden Sky Team

"The land is where our roots are. The children must be taught to feel and live in harmony with the Earth."
—Maria Montessori
